In 1973, Robert Merton Solow, American economist and winner of the Nobel Prize in Economics for his important contributions to theories of economic growth (1987), wrote that “the less you know about it, the better it sounds”.  He was in fact referencing the term sustainability almost half a century ago – the buzzword largely typified in the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) and now reinforced in the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

Sustainability simply refers to development that meets the needs of the present generation without comprising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs.

Other watchwords and terms such as “SCP – Sustainable Consumption and Production”, “Green Growth”, “Green Economy” and “Circular Economy” are inextricably linked and lead to the same overall objective, which is sustainable development.  Reliable reports state that if the current resource use trends continue, driven by industrialization and urbanization, the majority of countries will face considerable economic, social, and environmental costs.

Rest assured that there is no real conflict between economic development and sustainability.  The latter calls for a more resource-efficient and long-term sustainable growth path and not curtailing growth.  Also, there is a need for us to wear the life cycle thinking lens as it is a way of looking at the environmental impact of products and services from a broader perspective.  It provides the framework for a holistic assessment to be applied to any kind of system or value chain.

Moreover, we can say with significant confidence that sustainability is a critical element of a holistic approach to poverty reduction and social inclusion that needs to be part of an overall poverty alleviation policy in any country.
